Meet the Maker
Claire Cushnahan is a British ceramic artist whose work explores ritual and the celestial rhythms that shape the natural world. Working primarily with stoneware clay, she creates sculptural yet functional pieces that honour the divine feminine and lunar symbolism, bringing a sense of quiet intention to everyday life.
After graduating from the Sir John Cass School of Art, London Metropolitan University, in 2007, Claire trained as an Art teacher and went on to teach in alternative education. It was here that she discovered her love of clay - a material that would become central to her practice. Over the past decade, she has run weekly ceramics workshops for adults of all abilities at Eastcott Studios, a local pottery studio and gallery, where she also exhibits her work and continues to share the therapeutic qualities of working with clay.
Claire is currently the pottery tutor at Ruskin Mill Trust, an educational organisation whose craft-based ethos fosters a deep connection to the land, natural materials and the wider cosmos - a philosophy that resonates strongly within her own work.
Her ceramics are inspired by folklore, lunar cycles and the symbolism of the divine feminine. She creates altar pieces, ritual smudge holders, candle vessels and sculptural forms inspired by crystals and nature’s offerings. Each hand-built piece embraces organic textures, gentle irregularities and the flowing unpredictability of glazes, existing between functional pottery and ritual objects - small anchors of beauty, reflection and intention within daily life.
Claire’s work has been featured on a well-known UK pottery programme and is collected internationally. She sells and accepts commissions worldwide through her Etsy shop, Ccushnahan Ceramics.
